Micellar Water or Micellar Milk? - Choose the right one for you!

Updated: May 1, 2021

Milk vs. Water – two options of a wide range of makeup removers that exist in the beauty industry- so which one works best for you?

Let’s start with some science.

Surfactants or surface active ingredients are compounds that lower the surface tension between two liquids, a liquid and gas, or between a liquid and a solid. These may act as soaps, detergents, cleansers, foaming agents, and others. In this case, micellar milks and micellar waters are made of a formula that contains suspended surfactant molecules which attract dirt and oil so they can be pulled out of the skin’s surface.

Here’s a quick breakdown between these two:

  • Micellar Milk: Composed of emollient rather fat (oils and butters) that remove all impurities.

  • Micellar Water: Gives you an instant refreshed effect and immediate cleansing. It is composed of micelles, which are very fine oil particles that allow a perfect skin cleansing.

You can choose from a micellar water or micellar milk depending on the amount of makeup you put on. For example:

- If you applied more makeup than usual: Start by using a micellar milk to remove stubborn mascara and foundation. Afterwards, you can use a micellar water to eliminate all make-up remains and cleanse the skin.

- If your makeup is light: You can choose either or according to your skin. Milks are suitable for sensitive and dry skin, while waters are best for oily to normal skin.

- If you do not use makeup or just a tad: A micellar water will remove all natural impurities accumulated through the day.

Now that you have figured out which one is which, here is a small essential guide for choosing the right makeup remover:

  • Choose the best option according to your skin.

  • Check for ingredients.

  • Choose a product that gives back to your skin.

  • Choose a product that is easy and fits your beauty regimen.
